The Tomülpass ( 2412  m above sea level ) is an alpine pass in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . The pass connects the Safiental with the Valsertal .

history

Poland route sign

In the late summer of 1869 a shepherd found a dagger blade and a bird handle dagger from the late Bronze Age in the alpine region . Finds from the Iron Age in Surcasti , Vella and Vals suggest that this route was already used for pass traffic back then. However, the pass only had local significance.

During the Second World War , the pass path on the Safier side via Alp Falätscha was paved by interned Poles up to the pass ( Polenweg ) and made accessible for light motor vehicles. The students from the university camp in Friborg, who were housed in Turrahus in the summer of 1941, complemented the 220 French people who had been housed in the valley since 1940 in Platz and Thalkirch and the several hundred Poles on the Grossalp in the south of the Safien Valley. The internees built a total of 50 km of alpine paths in the Safiental. A cable car was also to lead from Grossalp south of the Tomül Pass towards Safierberg, the evidence of which is lost. All of these measures to improve the infrastructure served to secure the San Bernardino Pass from behind via the Safierberg and Valserberg crossings to the Rheinwald . On the Vals side, internees paved the section from Alp Tomül to the top of the pass.

Hiking routes

The Alp Tomül ( 2179  m above sea level. M. ) is the property of the municipality Flims . It is the starting point for the normal route to Piz Tomül and the Bärenhorn . The mountain path to the Bärenhorn was deleted from the Swiss inventory of hiking trails and is no longer marked today.

From the pass you can get on a good path ( grade T2 ) over alpine pastures and meadows in an effortless hike over Alp Falätscha to Turrahus ( 1694  m above sea level ) in Safiental or in the other direction over Alp Tomül ( 2179  m above sea level). ) to Vals. The route is also popular with mountain bikers, but it is demanding.
