history

Jamtalhütte around 1894

The hut was built in 1882 and was initially unmanaged. It initially had a total of ten beds, after extensions in 1897 and 1907, due to the emerging ski tourism of the twenties, extensive modernization was carried out in 1929–32, with a drinking water pipe and power supply being laid. Between 1939 and 1945, the customs border guard occupied the hut to guard the nearby Swiss border and from 1942 onwards they built a high mountain school. After the Second World War, the huts of the German Alpine Club were under Allied administration; In 1955 the hut was returned to the Swabian section of the German Alpine Club. Until 1958 the hut was supplied by pack animals or draft horses. After the Vorarlberger Illwerke built a freight road for the construction of the water intake located at 1840 m in the Jamtal, the Alpine Club house could be supplied with small tugs or off-road vehicles. Until 1962, supplies were brought up on skis in winter, only then did vehicles come that could also be used on snow. From 1958 to 1961 a second building was added to the existing hut by Güglingen architect Heinz Rall , the so-called Robert-Leicht-Bau, which still exists today. Between 1978 and 1979 the old parts of the hut were demolished and rebuilt, including new water supply and disposal. Despite its remote location, it is powered by a 20 kV cable. After the damage from avalanches in 1999, the hut was extensively repaired and made avalanche-proof.

Since it was opened, it has been managed by the Lorenz family from Galtür , now in the fifth generation .

A mountain rescue base is located a little below the hut.

Avalanche accident in 1999

On February 22, 1999 the hut was badly damaged by two avalanches of dust. People were not harmed. One day later, on February 23, 1999, 31 people died in the devastating avalanche disaster in Galtür , including the two hut owners Hildegard and Edith Lorenz, members of the current tenant Gottlieb Lorenz, who has been working since 1995.

On December 28, 1999, an avalanche from the Steinmandl (2353 m) area buried 14 ski tourers near the Jamtalhütte ; nine of them died.
