The Madlenerhaus is a mountain hut in the Silvretta at 1986  m above sea level. A. Höhe a little below the Bielerhöhe in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) west of the dam of the Silvretta reservoir in Großvermunt. The Silvrettahütte of the Vorarlberger Naturfreunde is nearby .

history

In 1878, four years after Bregenz alpinist Andreas Madlener , the third chairman in the history of the Vorarlberg section of the DUÖV , took office, the plan was made to build a refuge on the Vermunt glacier to better develop the Silvretta. The Vorarlberg section began building the Vermunthütte in 1882 . Since Andreas Madlener died on March 14, the year it was completed, it was opened on August 24, 1884 under the name Madlenerhaus . Years later , under the new chairman Heinrich Hueter , the section ran into financial difficulties and in June 1906 was forced to sell the house for 2000 marks to the Wiesbaden section of the German and Austrian Alpine Association, which operated the house until 2012. The purchase was linked to the requirement to keep the name; a buyback was no longer possible. In 1908 a ward block was added. In the same year the Madlenerhaus was damaged by a foehn storm . This damage was repeated in 1926 and 1974. In the winter of 1925/26, Ernest Hemingway and his ski instructor Lent from Schruns were guests several times. The house was mentioned in his novel Snow on Kilimanjaro when he remembered the week in 1925 when he played poker with Lent at the hut. In 1927 a gable end was destroyed in a storm. During the repair work, the top floor was also expanded. From 1939 onwards, the Madlenerhaus was misused due to the war.

During the construction of the Silvretta reservoir , the Vorarlberger Illwerke built a housing estate between Madlenerhaus and the dam. Since then this has been called Silvrettadorf . From 1952 the hut could be used for tourism again. In 1980 the building was damaged by fire. On October 31, 2001, there was a major fire in which two thirds of the Madlenerhaus was destroyed. It could only be reopened in June 2003. The reconstruction with expansion (transverse building with sanitary rooms and new beds) cost around 1.4 million euros. The Wiesbaden section sold the hut to Vorarlberger Illwerke with effect from January 1, 2013. The reason was, among other things , the multi-year construction site operation in the area around the Bielerhöhe , which would be expected for the construction of Obervermuntwerk II , which would impair tourism . In 2020, the former pressure pipeline running alongside the house from Lake Silvrettasee to Obervermuntwerk I will be dismantled.

After the house had been closed to the public for several years and was building site accommodation, it reopened its doors in June 2019 after the Obervermunt II pump storage plant was completed. There are still discounts for members of the Alpine Club, even if the room rates are now higher than in the houses belonging to the Alpine Club.

getting there

summer

  • By train and bus: Take the Montafonerbahn from Bludenz to Schruns and then take the Postbus number 85, whose timetable is coordinated with that of the train, to the Madlenerhaus stop (one stop before the Bielerhöhe terminus). Tickets from the Vorarlberg transport association are valid ; a toll is charged for the section on the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße. From the bus stop, it's about a five-minute walk to the hut.
  • By car: In summer, the hut can be reached by car via the Silvretta High Alpine Road, both via the Montafon and from the Paznaun Valley .

winter

The Madlenerhaus can be reached from Partenen with the Vermuntbahn and minibuses through two tunnels. Galtür also offers transport (for a fee) in snow taxis or snow groomers. With suitable conditions, you can go up on skis from Partenen or Galtür. A cross-country ski run through Großvermunt leads past the house.
