Valschaviel is an alp and valley of the same name in the Montafon in Vorarlberg , and belongs to the municipality of Gaschurn in the Bludenz district . The Almdorf, one of the largest in Vorarlberg, is relatively well preserved in its historical substance and has become known as the setting for Joseph Vilsmaier's film Bergkristall .

geography

The Almdorf is a mountain pasture, i.e. a Niederalpe, which is called Maiensäß here . It is located in the Valschavielbach valley of the same name , a side valley of the Illtal , which leads into the mountains of the Verwall group . The valley forms the entire north-eastern part of the Gaschurn municipality, towards Silbertal .

Out of the valley lies the small Alpe Barketta , via Valschaviel the Alpe Bizul , and in the valley opposite the Alpe Ibau . The grounds around the Alpe are owned by the Agrargemeinschaft Valschaviel (open Maisäß), the mountain mowers stretch up to 2000 meters. The surrounding forests mostly belong to the Montafon state .

In the north, the Madererkamm of the Verwall forms the edge of the valley with the Valschavieler Maderer / Madererspitze  ( 2769  m above sea level ), the southern boundary is the Valschavielkamm with the Tavamunter Augstenberg  ( 2489  m above sea level ). The Gaschurner Winterjöchle and the much higher Valschavieljöchle lead to the west into the Schönverwall on the upper reaches of the Trisanna in Tyrol.

History and Buildings

The oldest buildings date to the 16th century ( Baroque ), most of them are likely from the 19th century. Some avalanche disasters and fires have survived that have led to renewals. In the 1980s a road was built up from the Illtal, since then a number of buildings with different uses and sizes have been built. In some of the buildings, however, there are still open fireplaces, brick stoves or old inventory. When the Maiensäß was being prepared as the location for the Vilsmayer film from 2004, the film team covered all of the buildings with wooden shingles, and today they show a more harmonious overall picture.

The arrangement of the buildings is interesting from a structural engineering point of view. The building type is dominated by a montafon two- and three-room floor plan, but there are also typical local combinations, with living areas, stables and hayracks behind or on top of each other.
