Wide Crown (Canton of Graubünden)
Wide crown

The width of the crown ( 3079  m above sea level. M. ), the Romansh in the idiom Vallader according Curuna Lada is called, is a mountain in the Fluchthorn group that is part of the eastern Silvretta is. It lies entirely on Swiss territory in the canton of Graubünden , but is only 700 meters east of the national border with Austria . Along with the higher Piz Tasna, it is one of the striking mountains at the end of the Fimbatal valley .

Location and surroundings

The Breite Krone is 700 meters east of the Kronenjoch ( 2980  m ), which lies in the main ridge of the Silvretta, which here separates the Jamtal in the west from the Fimbatal in the east and represents the border between Switzerland and Austria. The wide crown itself is not in the main ridge, but is in front of it to the east. At this point, the main ridge runs in a north-south direction and only turns to the west about 500 meters south of the Kronenjoch, at the Grenzckkopf . The Breite Krone is separated from the main ridge by the so-called false Kronenjoch ( 2958  m ), which is an indistinct saddle and is located 300 meters west of the "real" Kronenjoch, which is a little more than 20 meters higher.

Remains of the Vadret da Fenga glacier (Fimbergferner) can be found north of the Breite Krone . This formerly large, terraced glacier once covered the eastern flank of the main ridge from the Fluchthorn to the Furcla Tasna, so that the wide crown was probably completely surrounded by ice.

Alpinism

From the Kronenjoch or the false Kronenjoch, the Breite Krone can be easily climbed over scree from the west in less than a quarter of an hour. You can get to the false Kronenjoch from the north, from the Heidelberger Hütte , in around 2½ hours. Alternatively, you can reach the Breite Krone from the Jamtalhütte via the Kronenjoch in 2½ to 3 hours. The ascent of the Breiten Krone is also possible as part of an easy ski tour.
