history

Mathon

Until the late Middle Ages, a community of free farmers lived in the Schamserberg, the so-called "Free on the Schamserberg"; some privileged people lived in the valley floor. Churches in Mathon and Lohn are described for the first time in 831, and in 1204 the homines liberos de Saxammo are mentioned. In the peace treaty of 1428 between Chiavenna and the Schams valley community, the Ammann appears to the community on Schamserberg with his own seal.

Due to the lower jurisdiction, the “free people on the Schamserberg” were able to determine the use of forest, pasture and Alps themselves; The meeting place was Mathon. The high level of jurisdiction lay with the owners of the count's power in shame.

After the shame feud in 1451/1452 and the ransom of the valley from the sovereign in 1458, the "free people on the Schamserberg" became part of the Schams judicial community.

tourism

The small churches on the slopes of the Schamserberg are worth seeing. In the churches of Casti and Clugin there are pictures of the Waltensburg master .

In summer the Schamserberg is ideal as a hiking area, in winter there are a variety of toboggan runs with around 12 kilometers of groomed trails.
