Johann Abraham Mayer

Johann Abraham Mayer (born January 25, 1684 in Wittenberg , † March 1, 1726 in Greifswald ) was a German medic.

Johann Abraham Mayer was the son of Johann Friedrich Mayer and his wife Catharina Sabina Welsch. In his childhood and youth he received lessons from Johann Philipp Palthen , Johann Albert Palthen and Gregor Langemak . In 1701 he moved to the University of Greifswald and began studying medicine under the direction of Caspar March . In the following years he enrolled at other universities to study. So in 1702 in Kiel , in autumn 1704 in Rostock , 1707 again in Greifswald and a year later in Leipzig . Mayer then moved abroad, more precisely to the Netherlands, where he received his doctorate in medicine scholarship from the University of Utrecht in 1710 . In 1710 he was elected adjunct of the medical faculty at the University of Greifswald, but he stayed most of the time in Berlin. In 1716 he was given a full professorship in medicine. In 1720 he was elected rector of the university.

In 1710 he married Barbara Catharina Balthasar (1697–1750), the daughter of the Greifswald legal scholar Jakob Balthasar (1652–1706). They had nine children together.
