Diedrich Hermann Biederstedt , also: Diederich, Dietrich (born November 1, 1762 in Stralsund , † March 10, 1824 in Greifswald ) was a German theologian, royal Swedish consistorial councilor and historian.

Life

The eldest son of the lessee of the mill at Stralsund Kniepertor attended the grammar school in his hometown from 1769 . From 1783 to 1786 he studied theology at the University of Göttingen . Because of a serious illness of his father († 1787) he returned to Swedish Pomerania in autumn 1786 , where he completed his studies at the University of Greifswald .

He then tried repeatedly unsuccessfully for a pastor's position in Stralsund. During this time he worked as a private tutor for Stralsund families. In 1788 he received his master's degree and on the recommendation of his predecessor Julius Gottfried von Aeminga, who had retired for health reasons, he was elected archdeacon at St. Nikolai Cathedral in Greifswald. The ordination took place in 1789. He worked in this office until his death and turned down job offers from Hamburg (1796) and Copenhagen (1802). In 1805 the University of Göttingen awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 1811 he was appointed consistorial councilor.

Biederstedt lived unmarried with few staff in the rectory at Greifswalder Domstrasse 13. He rented out large parts of the house, including to Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus , who had his children baptized by Biederstedt, and Lieutenant Colonel von Klinkowström from Ludwigsburg . During the French period he left the rectory because Napoleonic officers had been quartered in it, and rented it to his fellow student in Göttingen , the court judge Haselberg . Biederstedt lived in two rooms at Domstrasse 21 until the end of his life.

Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten described Biederstedt as the most famous pulpit speaker in the country, but as such he was controversial. The general superintendent Johann Christoph Ziemssen entrusted him in 1812 with the task of giving the thanksgiving sermon on the occasion of Napoleon's entry into Moscow .

Adolf Häckermann described Biederstedt's theological writings in the General German Biography as "of no significance". In contrast, he attested his biographical and statistical work "a high factual value". From 1787 Biederstedt wrote reviews for the Greifswald “Neuesten Critischen Nachrichten”. In 1794 he published a paper on population statistics based on the baptism, marriage and death registers. In addition to writings on regional history, he wrote many short biographies.
