Johann Christoph Ziemssen (born October 6, 1747 in Stralsund , † August 17, 1824 in Greifswald ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian and from 1812 to 1824 General Superintendent of Western Pomerania in Greifswald.

Live and act

Ziemssen was born the son of the rent master and carpenter Johann Christoph Ziemssen and his wife Catharina Margaretha Wollert, who married on May 5, 1746 in Stralsund. After attending the Sundisches Gymnasium in Stralsund, he studied theology, philosophy and mathematics in Greifswald from March 12, 1768 , and received his doctorate in theology.

In 1776 he became a deacon at the St. Marien Church in Greifswald. In 1788 Ziemssen became a lecturer at the University of Greifswald and later head of the state school seminar founded in 1791 in the Hanseatic city. In 1792 he advanced to the position of adjunct of the local theological university faculty.

In 1802 he was appointed full professor of theology and pastor at St. Marien as well as assessor of the Greifswald consistory . The theological faculty of the University of Rostock awarded him a doctorate in theology and he was knight of the Red Eagle Order 3rd class. In 1805 and 1810 he was rector of the University of Greifswald. In 1812 he was finally appointed general superintendent for Swedish-Pomerania in Greifswald - in succession to Gottlieb Schlegel . He held this office for twelve years until his death. Of Ernst Moritz Arndt has been handed, he had Ziemssen appreciated as "patron and protector."

By order of March 8, 1828 it was determined that Carl Ritschl should be general superintendent for New and Old Pomerania in Stettin . With that the general superintendent was abolished in Western Pomerania.
