Johann Christian Friedrich Finelius

Johann Christian Friedrich Finelius (born January 5, 1787 in Greifswald , † December 22, 1846 there ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of the Greifswald cantor and music director Johann Jacob Finelius attended the Greifswald city school and studied theology at the University of Greifswald from 1804 to 1810 . In 1811 he became a deacon at the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and a Doctor of Philosophy PhD . He completed his habilitation in 1814 as a private lecturer. In 1818 he became an adjunct in the theological faculty. In 1822 he was appointed associate professor and in 1829 full professor of theology and was head of the theological-practical institute for homiletics and catechetics . In 1824 he was appointed pastor to St. Nikolai and in 1837 superintendent of Greifswald. In 1842 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class.

Finelius was a representative of the older rationalism after Heinrich Eberhard Gottlob Paulus . He wrote several writings on this subject, of which "On the continuous use of the Bible in families, churches and schools for the promotion and preservation of religion and morality" was awarded in 1810 in Göttingen .

His artistic talent as a draftsman was trained by Johann Gottfried Quistorp during his student days . Finelius mainly made portraits . He was friends with Caspar David Friedrich and his family. He also wrote poems that were published in various magazines.

His son Hermann Karl Friedrich (1819–1849) studied medicine and wrote poetry, but died early. The daughter Luise (1813-1859) married the lawyer and politician Gustav von Hagenow .
