Johann August Grunert (born February 7, 1797 in Halle (Saale) , † June 7, 1872 in Greifswald ) was a German mathematician.

Life

Grunert began to study architecture at the University of Halle in 1815 , but he was enthusiastic about mathematics from Johann Friedrich Pfaff's lessons . After studying with Carl Friedrich Gauß in Göttingen , he returned to Halle, where he received his doctorate in 1820. From 1821 to 1828 he was a teacher at the grammar school in Torgau , then until 1833 in Brandenburg, and in 1833 he became a full professor of mathematics at the University of Greifswald , where he remained until the end of his life.

He also taught at the Eldena Agricultural Academy . From 1842 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

His mathematical textbooks for upper and middle classes of higher educational institutions were published several times, he was also the editor of the Archive of Mathematics and Physics (Greifswald 1841 ff.). A biography of Grunert von Curtze appeared in the 55th volume of the archive.
