Hellmuth Heyden

Hellmuth Heyden (born January 18, 1893 in Greifswald , † March 18, 1972 in Stralsund ) was a German theologian and church historian .

Life

Hellmuth Heyden's father was a constable in the gendarmerie who was transferred to Altdamm shortly after Hellmuth Heyden's birth . Here Hellmuth Heyden attended a private boys' school and from 1905 to 1911 the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin , where the historian Martin Wehrmann taught at that time . In 1911 he began studying theology at the University of Greifswald , which he continued in 1913 at the Universities of Tübingen and Halle and completed from 1914 to 1915 in Greifswald.

After military service from June to autumn 1915, which he served as a hospital assistant chaplain in Stettin and Neustettin , he became a chaplain at the military hospital in the Szczecin Frauendorf ( Golęcin ) district, later in Neustettin.

In 1915 he passed the first and in 1917 the second theological exam. From 1917 he worked as an assistant preacher; on January 27, 1918 he was ordained by general superintendent Johannes Büchsel in the Stettiner Schlosskirche and then elected pastor at the Bugenhagenkirche , from 1919 he was the third pastor there. In addition, he worked as an editor of the weekly newspaper "The Evangelical Stettin" and the "Blätter für Pomeranian Church History". He was a member of the Society for Pomeranian History, Archeology and Art .

He married Elisabeth Matz in 1921, with whom he had a daughter and a son.

In 1943 Hellmuth Heyden looked after the confirmands evacuated from Stettin in Grimmen , Tribsees , Demmin and Altentreptow , but returned to Stettin after the end of the war. After being expelled from Stettin in late summer, he first went to Grimmen and in the same year became a pastor in Richtenberg . From 1947 he was provisional, from 1949 officially Superintendent of the Franzburg parish .

In 1953 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Greifswald , where he taught theology and church history from 1954 to 1967.

In 1960 he moved to Stralsund, where he died in 1972.

His estate is in the regional church archive of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church in Greifswald.
