The Regional Church Archives Greifswald of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany has been one of the two branch offices of the Regional Church Archives of the Northern Church since June 1, 2012. As before the Pomeranian Evangelical Church , it serves the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District , based in Greifswald, as the final archive of the regional church institutions and offices as well as the church governing bodies. It is used for the storage, indexing and security of the archival documents of the Pomeranian regional church. In addition, it supervises the archives of the parishes and parishes as well as the historical libraries. As a public archive, it enables access to archive material for the purpose of scientific research as well as homeland, local and family history research.

history

After the Second World War , the consistory of the province of Pomerania was moved from Stettin to Greifswald. The majority of the archive holdings had to be left behind in Stettin or had already been destroyed by the effects of the war. The provincial church archive was set up in 1946 with a stock of church registers rescued from Western Pomerania as the basis.

In 1950 the archive moved to a building on Karl-Marx-Platz 15 in Greifswald. Around 1960 the archive was still being built and was co-administered by the Presidential Office of the regional church. The creation of an index card was still being planned. The archive material already included a picture archive, a collection of newspaper clippings and a collection of seal stamps . From 1975 the management was carried out by a full-time archivist .

Rudolf-Petershagen-Allee 3: Seat of the regional church archive in Greifswald

In August 2000, the archive moved to the Bishop's House at Rudolf-Petershagen- Allee 3 in Greifswald . This location was given up in autumn 2014, a new location has not yet been determined. After the climate in the archive rooms had deteriorated considerably, the archive had to be cleared at short notice. The archive holdings are housed in an interim storage facility; regular use is currently not possible.

Stocks

The files in the regional church archive in Greifswald amount to about 400 meters. Of these, 27 running meters are made accessible by finding aids (as of 2005). The remaining files have not yet been recorded. The majority of the files are made up of the general files of the consistory and the special files on land, buildings and farms owned by the PEK and on visitations from 1945 onwards .

Around 360 church registers, as well as postal diaries, stock books, chronicles, log books and church accounts from various parishes in Eastern Pomerania, especially from the church districts of Naugard and Daber , are among the most widely used holdings in the archive. Vorpommersche church books, especially from the areas of the district courts of Anklam , Greifswald, Loitz and Wolgast , are mostly available as duplicates. In addition, the parish registers of the garrison church in Stettin and the garrisons of Naugard and Swinoujscie are in the archive.

Further files come from the provincial and regional synods from 1946 to 1991 and the church leadership of the PEK. The files of the bishop's offices of the bishops Karl von Scheven , Friedrich-Wilhelm Krummacher and Horst Gienke are also kept . In addition to deposits from some parishes and superintendent's offices, the estate of the church historian Hellmuth Heyden is also located here .
