Karl Heinrich Albert von Scheven (born February 16, 1882 in Leopoldshagen ; † October 7, 1954 in Bad Wiessee ) was a German Protestant theologian and first bishop of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .

Life

Karl von Scheven was born as the first child of the pastor Johannes von Scheven in Leopoldshagen in Western Pomerania . He had four sisters. Scheven's male ancestors had always been either pastors or farmers over a period of 200 years.

Scheven grew up in a Pomeranian rectory. Shortly after his son was born, his father moved to the pastorate in Cunow near Bahn in Western Pomerania . Karl von Scheven was first taught by his father and private teachers and attended the Königliche Bismarck-Gymnasium in Pyritz from 1894 to 1901 , where he initially retired. After the father's death in 1898, the family moved to Pyritz. Karl von Scheven had to help with the household and earn money through tutoring.

After the Abitur , which was delayed by domestic duties, he studied theology at the universities of Halle , Berlin and Greifswald from 1901 . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Greifswald . In Berlin he also met Otto Dibelius , with whom he became friends from then on. He passed his exam in 1905. From 1906 to 1907 he was a member of the Cathedral Candidate Foundation in Berlin and briefly assistant teacher at an elementary school in Stettin . He passed his second exam in 1907 and was ordained on October 13 of the same year by General Superintendent Johannes Büchsel in the Szczecin Palace Church.

From 1907 to 1908 he looked after the German Protestant congregation in Cannes in southern France, first as vicar , then as pastor . In 1908 he became pastor and inspector of the Berlin city mission . In the same year he married Katharina Kühl, with whom he had a son, Siegfried von Scheven, in 1909. In 1911 he took over the pastoral position of his late father-in-law, Superintendent Hermann Kühl, in Pakulent ( Greifenhagen district ), with the three parishes of Pakulent, Heinrichsdorf and Klein Zarnow . In 1916 he was called up as a military pastor to Kolberg and as a military pastor to Stettin . After the First World War he returned to his parish.

In 1924 he became pastor in Neumark (Greifenhagen district) for the parishes of Neumark, Kolbatz and Dobberphul as well as superintendent of the Kolbatz parish with an official seat in Neumark. In 1925 he became a member of the Pomeranian Provincial Synod . In 1928 he was appointed pastor of the St. Nikolai Cathedral in Greifswald and city superintendent. He was also active here at times as the local pastor. He was a member of the examination committee for theologians and was a member of the provincial church committee and the general synod of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . During the Third Reich the joined von Scheven 1934 Pastors , a forerunner of the Confessing Church , at. Scheven rejected the influence of the state on the church, but was initially positive about the political changes. At the end of 1935 he became chairman of the Pomeranian Church Committee, but did not leave the Confessing Church; In 1937 he had to resign. In the same year he took a position delimiting German belief in a 7-thesis paper . In 1938 he handed over the work with the students to Johannes Fichtner.

After Greifswald was handed over to the Red Army without a fight , von Scheven contacted the Soviet city commander and was given permission to hold church services. He took over the clerical department of the consistory of the church province of Pomerania , which had meanwhile moved from Stettin to Greifswald . In 1946 he was appointed chairman of the church government with the title "Praeses". After the creation of a new church order for Pomerania and the formation of the now independent Pomeranian Evangelical Church , he was elected general superintendent with the title of Bishop of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church . He held this office from the beginning of January 1947 until his death during a stay at a cure in Upper Bavarian Bad Wiessee in 1954 due to heart problems .

On February 24, 1946, the Faculty of Theology, he was awarded the University of Greifswald , the honorary doctorate , along with Gottfried Holtz .

He was married to Katharina, geb. Kühl (1884-1969). Von Scheven was buried in the old cemetery in Greifswald.
