Herbert Ewe
Herbert Ewe (born July 20, 1921 in Wilhelmsdorf near Pölitz , † April 3, 2006 in Stralsund ) was a German historian and archivist . From 1952 to 1986 he headed the Stralsund City Archives .
Life
Herbert Ewe was born in Wilhelmsdorf near Pölitz in Pomerania in 1921 . He first attended the agricultural college in Stettin and was drafted into military service in 1940, seriously wounded in April 1945. After the Second World War he joined the SED in 1946 and studied German , historical geography and history at the University of Rostock , the University of Leipzig and the University of Greifswald . In 1952 he graduated with a diploma.
In August 1952 he became director of the Stralsund City Archives . The city archive owes him a thorough organization and recording of the holdings. From 1963, on his initiative, the Johanniskloster was renovated and turned into a branch office of the city archive. He held the position of archive director until he retired in 1986. His successor as archive director was Hans-Joachim Hacker .
In addition to his archive activity Ewe remained active at the University of Greifswald in 1959 he was in Greifswald with the dissertation The field names of complaints and their geographical significance for the island to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. In 1981 the doctorate B ( habilitation ) followed with the subject of city seals and historical maps as a source of maritime history in the Middle Ages and the early modern period . In 1982 he became honorary professor for historical auxiliary sciences .
Ewe wrote several books about the Hanseatic cities of Western Pomerania as well as the islands of Rügen and Hiddensee , their personalities and history. In total, he published over 150 books and articles.
In 1989 Ewe was a founding member of the citizens' committee "Save the Old Town" in Stralsund. For his services to the history of the city of Stralsund and Pomerania, he was elected honorary member of the Society for Pomeranian History, Archeology and Art . He was also a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania since 1990 . Herbert Ewe died on April 3, 2006 in Stralsund.
