Andreas Bratt (* 1769 in Åsaka parish, Västergötland , † February 27, 1811 ) was a Swedish mathematician and astronomer .

Life

Andreas Bratt, son of the country pastor of the same name in the Diocese of Skara , was taught by his father and private tutors. After a year at high school in Skara , he studied at Uppsala University and received his master's degree in 1789 . He taught astronomy as a private lecturer and later mathematics at Åbo University . In 1801 he went to the University of Greifswald , where he became a full professor of mathematics and physics . In 1804 he was elected rector of the university.

In 1810 he published an extensive paper against the dissolution of the University of Greifswald, which the Swedish government was considering. He explained in detail that this project would not bring any savings and that the city of Greifswald and its surroundings could suffer serious economic damage. Bratt was the first to demonstrate the cultural importance of the university, which goes beyond the borders of Swedish Pomerania . He outlined the great importance of Greifswald for Swedish culture and listed a large number of Swedes who had studied in Greifswald and later held high and highest offices in the church, state and universities of Sweden.

He himself wanted to return to Sweden as a pastor. In 1810, he tried to prove his qualifications in a theological work. His death in 1811 prevented his plan.
