Gottlieb Schlegel (born February 16, 1739 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † May 27, 1810 in Greifswald ) was a Protestant theologian and general superintendent of Swedish Pomerania .

Live and act

Gottlieb Schlegel was the son of a master tailor. In his hometown of Königsberg i. He attended the Collegium Fridericianum and studied theology at the University of Königsberg from 1754 . He was a student of Immanuel Kant and childhood friend of Gottfried Herder and Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten .

Schlegel went to Riga in the Russian governorate of Livonia , where he was rector from 1765 to 1780 and inspector of the Riga Cathedral School from 1782 to 1790 . Furthermore, from 1777 he was advancing from place to place preacher at the Cathedral in Riga and at St. Petri in Riga , most recently from 1788 senior preacher at St. Petri. During this time he was in 1777 at the University of Erlangen for Dr. theol. PhD.

In 1790 he followed a call to Swedish Pomerania , where he succeeded Bernhard Friedrich Quistorp as general superintendent based in Greifswald . He also took over the post of professor of theology at the University of Greifswald . Here he gave lectures on dogmatics , morals and ethics in the spirit of Wolff's philosophy and enlightenment .

In 1792 he published the Swedish-Pomeranian state catechism . This was followed in 1796 by a hymn book he co-authored , which, however, met with great opposition because of its strongly “rationalistic orientation”. In 1806 his work " Fundamentals of Dogmatics " appeared.

Schlegel died in Greifswald at the age of 71. His successor in the office of general superintendent was Johann Christoph Ziemssen .

Schlegel was married. The son Johann Gottlieb Schlegel (1787-1851) made a career as a military doctor in the Russian army and became president of the Medical and Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg .
