The Schwellisee is a mountain lake located at 1931  m near Arosa in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

Location and description

The lake is located on the Aroser Alp, southwest of Innerarosa outside the settlement area on the young Plessur below the Älplisees on the hiking trail towards Erzhorn - Aroser Rothorn .

Geology and formation

The Schwellisee is a so-called tongue basin, created by the damming of a landslide ( threshold ) from Schafrügg . It lies on the Arosa scale zone , which is made up of dolomite , limestone shale, crystalline scales and serpentine . The outline resembles an ivy leaf.

history

Before the Walsers arrived in Arosa, the area around the Schwellisee was surrounded by an extensive pine forest. The settlers cleared the stocks they needed for mining and other maintenance. The legendary Swiss stone pines standing above the lake on the path still bear witness to this today. In the lake itself there are pine logs from that time. At the beginning of the 20th century, a small room in the Hotel Kulm was paneled with wood from the lake. The tree trunk at the local history museum in Arosa also comes from the Schwellisee.

Fish stocks

Due to the water supply from Arosa from 1908 and later again, the lake has shrunk considerably in its expansion. Therefore there was a civil and constitutional process between the political community and the fishing association. Around 1900 there should not have been any fish in Schwellisee. In 1902 a certain M. Schmid sent a request to the Arosa City Council to let him have the lake for a reasonable rate of interest in order to use fish. He was denied this request, but in 1907 10,000 trout were used . In 1944 there were 2,000 Irida summerlings.

Further use

The Schwellisee is not used directly for tourism. In 1922 a fishing hut was built on the lake. In cold autumn, when the lake is frozen black, the Arosa people sometimes come up to ice skate. In 1989 the international Karrimor two -day mountain marathon and orienteering run led the participants to spend the night at the Schwellisee; a tent camp was specially set up. In winter, a popular variant descent from the Hörnli leads along the Verborgenen Weng down to the lake, which is then crossed on skis towards the northeast. Various proposals in the past to dam the Schwellisee and use it to generate electricity were not followed up.
