The Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG is a Swiss transport service - and tourism companies , whose activities on the region Arosa Lenzerheide in the canton of Grisons focus. The company employs around 220 people and generated transport income of 24.7 million Swiss francs in the 2017/18 financial year. Winter operation is the main business with a share of around 93 percent.

The major shareholders of the company are the municipality of Vaz / Obervaz with a stake of 34.75 percent, the community of Vaz / Obervaz with 12.75 percent and VV Value Vals AG with 25.15 percent. The remaining share is distributed among over 3,700 shareholders.

Field of activity

The mountain railway operation is the company's main business. Since the 2010/11 winter season, all catering establishments (8 restaurants, 3 snow bars) have been leased. The only exception since summer 2018 has been the Piz Scalottas mountain restaurant, which is now run independently with a couple of gerants.

The company operates a total of 22 facilities: one cable car , two gondola lifts , eleven chair lifts and eight ski lifts .

history

Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG gradually emerged from the merger of various mountain railway companies in the Lenzerheide region. Ski tourism began there with the commissioning of the Funibahn from Val Sporz to Tgantieni in 1936.

To build the Scalottas and Tgantieni ski lifts, the Tgantieni-Piz Scalottas AG high-speed lifts and chairlift were founded in 1942 . After this was put into operation, the previous Funibahn was relocated to Valbella in 1946 and the Stätzerhorn Ski- und Sessellift AG was founded from Churwalden to develop the Stätzerhorn and Pradaschier ski areas . In 1962, the Parpaner Rothorn AG aerial cableway was founded on the east side .

In 1968 the Stätzerhorn Ski- und Sessellift AG and the Skilifte Parpan AG merged. The following year saw the merger between the Parpaner Rothorn AG aerial cableway and the Tgantieni-Piz Scalottas AG Schnell-Lifte and chairlift . In 1972 the Sportbahnen Danis AG was founded, closing the gap between the Scalottas and Stätzerhorn areas. In 1986, a cooperation agreement between the mountain railways led to the launch of a network ticket for the entire region. This completed the network project that began in 1972 with the first tariff association between Stätzerhorn and Danis.

In 2001 the Stätzerhorn Ski- und Sessellift AG merged with the Sportbahnen Danis AG to form Lenzerheide Bergbahnen Danis Stätz AG . This was joined in 2005 by Rothornbahn and Scalottas AG . Associated with this was the shortening of the name to Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG .

Arosa Lenzerheide ski area

A project to connect a ski area with Arosa has been pursued for many years . At the end of November 2011 this was approved by the electorate; the official opening of the 225-kilometer winter sports arena took place on January 18, 2014.

In order to connect the ski areas, among other things, a double connecting lift was built from Hörnligrat to Urdenfürggli , the license of which is the Arosa Bergbahnen .

The cost of the so-called Urden Railway was estimated at around 20 million francs, but meteorological and geological difficulties caused costs to increase by around 10%. A supporting company, Urden AG, was founded for the implementation, in which the Arosa Bergbahnen, Lenzerheide Bergbahnen and Bergbahnen Tschiertschen are involved. Financing is secured through loans, guarantees and contributions from the public sector as well as bank loans.

The Urdenbahn has two cabins, each with a capacity of 150 people. The crossing from ridge to ridge takes around five minutes, including the waiting time in the stations. On the occasion of the German Design Awards 2015 given by the German Design Council, the system was named “Winner” in the “Transportation and Public Design” category from among 2,250 nominated products.

Lenzerheide Bergbahnen also built two new chairlifts from the terminus of the Heimberg chairlift via Motta to Urdenfürggli and built the Scharmoin mountain restaurant with 350 seats. The Schwarzhorn two-seater chairlift was demolished and sold to Tellnitz in the Czech Republic.

At the beginning, as a result of resistance from environmental protection associations, the exact design of the east-west connection on the Lenzerheide was unclear; the Heimberg – Proschieri chairlift project was initially withdrawn. After intensive negotiations with the municipality of Churwalden and the representatives of nature conservation, a weighing of the various interests led to the decision to resume and implement the original project.

In May 2014, the ski area connection was awarded the SVSM Award 2014 by the jury of the Swiss Association for Location Management (SVSM) due to its high level of innovation for the Arosa – Lenzerheide region .

For the 2015/16 winter season, Lenzerheide Bergbahnen AG has built the new Heidbüel panorama lift in Churwalden in addition to the east-west connection with the “Obertor” chairlift near Parpan . With regard to the 2015 renewal of the concession for the Rothornbahn 2nd section, Lenzerheide Bergbahnen also oriented itself towards the design of the Urdenbahn cabins and had the two new cabins also designed by Kuechler Design.
