The 25th World Mountain Running Championships (25th World Mountain Running Championships) took place on 6. September 2009 in the Italian communities Madesimo and Campodolcino instead. It consisted of four competitions that were held on a 4.3 kilometer long circuit with a difference in altitude of 275 meters . The men completed three laps (12.9 kilometers, 825 meters in altitude), the women and juniors two (8.6 kilometers, 550 meters in altitude) and the juniors one. Athletes who were at least 18 years old on December 31, 2009 were admitted to the senior competitions, and those who were between 16 and 19 years old on December 31, 2009 for the junior competitions.

In all competitions there was a team ranking in which the placements of the top four for men, the top three for women and juniors and the two best runners from each nation for juniors were added up.

After 24 editions of the World Mountain World Trophy , it was the first time that the competition organized by the World Mountain Running Association was officially recognized as a world championship by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). With the Ugandan Geofrey Kusuro there was the first African winner in the history of this world comparison.

The winner, Elisa Desco , tested positive for the erythropoietin derivative CERA. After a year and a half trial, the Italian was disqualified and a ban was imposed on her. The British team moved up to first place as a result of this decision, while the Italian team fell back to silver.
