Erçek Gölü is a salt lake in the eastern Turkish province of Van . It is located about 20 km east of the much larger Lake Van , which has an area of 3755 km².

The Erçek Gölü is 1890 m high and has an area of 106.2 km². The greatest depth is 40 m and the average depth is 18.45 m. The water temperature is between 1 and 23 ° C. The lake water is very salty. The pH is 10.75. The north and west shores of the lake are steep and mountainous (2300 to 2800 m high), in the west and south they consist of silt. The main tributary of the lake is the Memedik , which forms a delta with reed beds and a brackish wetland in the southeast. The outflow-free lake is now connected by a tunnel to the Karasu , which drains into Lake Van.

The European route 300 and the Van – Tabriz railway to Iran run on the south-eastern shore of the lake.

ecology

The lake is an important stopover for migratory birds, 177 different bird species have been observed on its shore, 71 bird species occur all year round. The carp species Chalcalburnus tarichi ( Turkish İnci Kefalı ), which is also found in Lake Van , has only been native to the lake since it was introduced in 1985 .

history

It is commonly believed that the Memedik was dammed up by an eruption of the Nemrut Dag . In Karagündüz on the eastern shore of the lake a stele of the Urartian rulers Menua and Išpuini was found.
