Procopio Serpotta

Procopio Serpotta (* 1679 in Palermo , † 1756 ibid) was an Italian sculptor and plasterer of the late Baroque in Sicily .

Life

Procopio was a member of the Palermo-based sculptor and plasterer family Serpotta. His father was Giacomo Serpotta , in whose workshop he was trained and whose skills he almost reached. Procopio worked exclusively in Palermo and the surrounding area. He often worked with other family members, in some cases with the architect Giacomo Amato and the painter Antonio Grano . One of his students was Gaspare Firriolo. In addition to purely ornamental stucco work, he also created full figural sculptures by his hand. His best work is the decoration work in the oratorio Santa Caterina all'Olivella from 1719. Towards the end of his life, the quality of his work declined. He was a grandson of Gaspare Serpotta (1634-1670), who worked as a marble sculptor and sculptor. Giuseppe Serpotta was his uncle.
