Vincenzo degli Azani da Pavia, called "il Romano" (active in Palermo from 1519; † July 16, 1557 in Palermo) was an Italian Renaissance painter in Sicily .

Life

There are contradicting statements about its origin. While Francesco Baronio thinks he comes from Palermo, Giuseppe Cosentino claims that he was born in Pavia. In 1519 he was first recorded in Palermo. He probably received his first training in Naples . It is certain that he joined Raphael's workshop in Rome , whose artistic conception he internalized and represented in his large altarpieces throughout his life. He only followed the stylistic expression of Lombard masters for smaller works, such as predelles . In 1527 he returned to Palermo after a long stay in Messina , where he married in 1533. Here he created a series of high quality panel paintings that made him the most famous painter of the 16th century on the island.
