Ignazio Marabitti (born January 6, 1719 in Palermo , † January 10, 1797 ibid) was an Italian sculptor in Sicily and the last important representative of the Palermitan school of sculpture.

Life

In Rome he was a student of the Florentine sculptor Filippo Della Valle (1697–1768), who was a member of 1730 and from 1752 three times Princeps of the Academy of San Luca in Rome. Here Marabitti learned the technique of high relief , thus continuing the sculpting tradition founded by the Gagginis and Giacomo Serpotta in Sicily.

In his workshop in Piazza S. Onofrio , he employed many employees and students to carry out the numerous orders, mostly from aristocratic Palermitans.

His earliest work is the statues of Peter and Paul on the facade of the cathedral in Syracuse from 1746. His main works are in Palermo, where he spent most of his life. His Fontana del Genio and Cavallo Marino fountains became particularly well known . He realized elegant high reliefs and tombs that embodied the spirit of the Sicilian aristocracy .
