Pietro Novelli (born March 2, 1603 in Monreale , † August 27, 1647 in Palermo ) called "Il Monrealese" was the most important Sicilian painter of the 17th century.

life and work

He enjoyed his education with his father Pietro Antonio Novelli (* 1568 Monreale, † Monreale). He was particularly influenced by the works of Caravaggio and Anthony van Dyck , who worked in Palermo in 1624 . As a result, Novelli's images became more delicate and elegant. Shortly after 1630 he left Sicily and traveled to Italy , also coming to Naples and Rome . In Naples he was particularly impressed by the work of the Spanish painter Ribera , who, through the amalgamation of Caravaggio's art and his own realism, had a decisive influence on the art of Spain and Naples in the 17th century. After Novelli's return, numerous panel paintings and frescoes were created in quick succession from 1634, which he gave a new power and effect previously unknown in Sicily. He drew his motifs primarily from religious themes, with which he usually adorned churches. In Monreale in 1635 he created his main work: The Life of Saint Benedict . This and other works, such as Cain and Abel after the murder or The Maiden Wedding , established his artistic fame in Sicily. Novelli held the office of royal architect from 1643. His tomb is in the church of San Domenico in Palermo.

The artistic direction developed by Novelli was not continued after his death in Sicily. His son Pietro Antonio II Novelli (* 1622; † 1643) and daughter Rosalia Novelli (* 1628) were also painters.

The painting of Mary with the Child Jesus ( Madonna con il Bambino in Gloria ) is in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia in Palermo.
