Pietro Antonio Novelli

Pietro Antonio Novelli (* 1568 in Monreale ; † May 6, 1625 ibid) was a painter and mosaicist of the late Renaissance in Sicily .

His father, from Messina , was the first teacher. After handing over the first mosaics in Nicolosi and for the Cathedral of Monreale , he went to Messina around 1588 to study painting. Back in Monreale he was appointed cathedral builder in 1595.

It is recorded in writing that on July 2, 1603, he gave a painting to Pietro Borgia in Piana dei Greci and in a contract of July 26, 1604 between Novelli and the brotherhood of S. Giovanni degli Orfani in Piana it is agreed that he would be for the church S. Giorgio was supposed to paint three frescoes, four paintings and an additional oil painting. The frescoes have not survived, while the oil painting with the baptism of Christ is still in the today.

Even if Novelli's art did not reflect the achievements of Italian mainland painting of the time, it is nonetheless characterized by solid craftsmanship. Pietro Antonio Novelli's son is the famous painter Pietro Novelli , "Il Monrealese". Pietro Antonio Novelli died of the plague on May 6, 1625 .
