Santa Maria degli Angeli , called Chiesa della Gancia, is a late Gothic church in Palermo .

With the permission of Pope Innocent VIII , the Minorites of the convent of Santa Maria di Gesù were allowed in 1430 to build a "gancia", a hospice for the sick and visitors to the city, and a monastery in front of the city gates. Between 1485 and 1508 the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli was added to the complex. The monastery was secularized in 1866 and has served as the administration of the provincial curia since 1999. The west facade and the south wall of the church along Via Alloro are extremely simple. The portals from 1530 point to late Gothic-Catalan origins, which are combined with elements of the Renaissance.

The single-nave interior with deep chapels is the result of profound changes, particularly since 1673 by Gaspare Guercio and then in 1782 under the direction of Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia . The flat wooden ceiling dates back to the 16th century. The large organ above on the inner west wall was built by Raffaele La Valle in 1615 .

A hole is marked in the church through which, in 1860, the two freedom fighters Gaspare Bivona and Filippo Patti Mazzini, who are now venerated by the citizens of Palermo, were able to escape from the Bourbon troops in the monastery and hide there with the help of some locals.

In one area of the pillared courtyard of the Franciscan “Gancia”, frescos from the 17th century with the family tree of the Friars Minor are attached. In the former Oratorio dei Pescatori there are stucco decorations attributed to Vincenzo Messina. Part of the former monastery complex has been used as a branch ( sede Gancia ) of the Palermo State Archives since 1859 .
