The Archivio di Stato di Palermo ( Palermo State Archive) is an Italian state archive in Palermo and the most important public archive on the island of Sicily , as it stores the important holdings for pre-university administration. In 1814, a royal decree ordered the establishment of an archivio generale , after the administrative records had been collected in one place since the late 18th century. Around 1826 the first holdings in the former Theatine Convent near Santa Maria alla Catena on Corso Vittorio Emanuele , where the archive's headquarters are still located today. Since 1843 the archive has been called Grande Archivio . In 1854 it was decided to use the former Franciscan convent on the Gancia for the archive, in 1859 the files of the Palermitan notaries and those of the surrounding area were transferred there, 84,145 volumes for the period from 1323 to 1853. An imbreviation book from the end of the 13th century is in the Archivio Storico Comunale .

The holdings at the “Catena”, which are important for historical research, include the diplomatic funds ( diplomatico ), each referred to as tabulario , a total of 6167 documents. Provenances are mainly abolished monasteries from all parts of Sicily, including Magione and Martorana . Digitization began in 2004. The episcopal archives are usually still kept at the diocese, with the exception of Cefalù , part of which is in the Palermo State Archives, Monreale , whose old holdings are in the Biblioteca Centrale della Regione Siciliana , and Messina , whose archive was moved to Spain in 1679. In addition, the register volumes of the Real Cancelleria , which began in 1299, the Protonotaro del regno , from 1349, the Protonotaro della camera reginale , from 1453, and the Real Segreteria , from 1611, should be mentioned. Subgroups of the Segreteria collection also begin earlier: the Secrezia di Palermo 1397 and the Segretari del Regno 1500. These series of files, together more than 11,400 volumes, were kept up into the first decades of the 19th century. 117 volumes in the Conservatoria del registro fund , which comprises several thousand volumes, contain the files of the visitations carried out in application of the Monarchia Sicula , the Sacre regie visite . The last visit to cover all of Sicily was carried out by Giovanni Angelo De Ciocchis from 1741 to 1743 .

The documents of the humiliates from Cremona are to be regarded as archival aberrations . The State Archives also have the oldest manuscript of the Getica des Jordanes that has survived today .

The archive also has a branch in Termini Imerese . The Scuola di Archivistica Paleografia e Diplomatica at the Archives is one of the seventeen Italian archival schools . A chair for palaeography to train future archivists had already been provided when the archive was founded; the first lecturer was Salvatore Cusa . The Soprintendenza archivistica della Sicilia , the archival supervisory authority for the archives on the island, is also connected to the archive, the Soprintendente is also the director of the archive.
