Santa Maria della Catena is a church building in Palermo . It is located on Via della Cala south of the harbor basin .

The building was built between 1500 and 1540 and is an example of the architectural style of the Catalan late Gothic . A vestibule with three arcades leads into a three-aisled interior with high columns , which was redesigned in the Baroque style in the 18th century . However, this stucco work has since been removed to bring the structure back to its original state. Next to the church, the Theatines built their convent at the beginning of the 17th century, in which the Palermo State Archives have had their headquarters since 1826 .

The name Santa Maria della Catena (Saint Mary of the Chain) goes back to the fact that the port used to be cordoned off from the church with a chain every evening. Concerts are often held in the church today .
