Vincenzo Riolo (born February 14, 1772 in Palermo ; † July 5, 1837 there ) was an Italian painter of classicism in Sicily .

Life

Riolo was the son of the rich merchant Rosario Riolo and his wife Teresa. He was therefore initially trained in this direction. At an early age he showed a tendency towards painting, which his father initially did not approve, instead he should study Roman and Greek history, mythology and Latin. He therefore learned the art by first assisting a painter and later, around the age of 18, became a student of Francesco Sozzi and Antonio Manno in Palermo. Due to a close connection to the painter Giuseppe Velasco , he married his daughter Maria-Anna in 1798. A year later he went to Naples and in 1800 with financial support from his father to Rome to see Jean-Baptiste Wicar , who introduced him to neo- classicism. He was also impressed by the works of Michelangelo .

He stayed in Rome for twenty years, where he made contact with writers like Vincenzo Monti , whom he also portrayed. He joined the neo-classicist movement around Vincenzo Camuccini and Pietro Benvenuti , but at the same time occupied himself with the painters of the Renaissance and early classicism in Rome. On his return to Palermo he was entrusted with numerous public and private commissions for frescoes and panel paintings . After Velasco's death in 1828, Riolo became director of the Art Academy in Palermo.

He died of cholera in 1837 . In Palermo's Chiesa di San Domenico there is a plaque commemorating his services to the arts.

His students were among others Giuseppe Patania and Francesco Ognibene (Palermo 1785-1837). The grandson Rosario (1808–1886) was a mosaicist and painter of vedutas and landscapes.
