Sant'Ignazio all'Olivella
Sant'Ignazio all'Olivella is a Baroque church in Palermo . It is located between Via Roma and Via Marqueda in Piazza Olivella.
description
The patron saint of the church is the ancient church martyr Ignatius of Antioch ; his martyrdom is shown in a painting by Filippo Paladini in the transept. According to popular opinion, the epithet of the church is derived from "olim villa" (it was a villa), since according to tradition this was the home of the patron saint of Palermos Santa Rosalia . Sant'Ignazio, a foundation and the church of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Palermo, is part of an extensive building complex that includes the former religious house of the Congregation (now the National Archaeological Museum "Antonio Salinas" ) and an oratory . The Fathers are now based on Via Roma.
The system was designed by Antonio Muttone . Construction began in 1598 and lasted until 1622. The dome followed in 1732. The twin bell towers were added in 1752. In 1775 a large ascent was built.
The three-aisled interior, separated by rows of columns, and the transepts form the shape of a Latin cross . Of the type of note are Cosmati designed floor in polychrome marble and stone mosaic works by Gaspare Guercio in the first chapel on the right. The altar was made by Francesco Ferrigno from Trapani based on a design by the famous architect Filippo Juvarra . The ceiling frescoes are by Antonio Manno . The church is furnished with important paintings such as the and other panel paintings as well as sculptures by Ignazio Marabitti and Giambattista Ragusa .
The right transept leads to the oratory, which was architecturally implemented by Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia . Ignazio Marabitti completed the decoration with magnificent stucco work . It is called "stucchi della gloria" because of the numerous groups of angels.
