Domenico Fiasella , called "Il Sarzana" (born August 12, 1589 in Sarzana , † October 14, 1669 in Genoa ) was an Italian baroque painter and a leading exponent of the Genoese school of the 17th century.

Fiasella was the son of the silversmith Giovanni Fiasella, who worked for the cathedral in Sarzana. In Genoa, on the recommendation of the Bishop of Sarzana, Domenico began a multi-year artistic training with Aurelio Lomi at the age of 11 , which was continued in the workshop of Giovanni Battista Paggi .

From 1607 to 1616 he was in Rome , where he attended the Accademia del Nudo. There he worked with Domenico Passignano and Giuseppe Cesari ("Cavalier d'Arpino"). In addition to studying the paintings by Andrea del Sarto , Raffael , Michelangelo and others in Rome , Sarzana was particularly interested in Caravaggio's Chiaroscuro , which he learned through his occasional collaboration with Orazio Gentileschi . Through the agency of Gentileschi, he made friends with the Genoese art collector Vincenzo Giustiniani , who became one of his most important patrons during this time. In 1617 he returned to Sarzana and went to Genoa a year later, where he had a lasting impact on local art.

One of his most important commissions in the early Genoese years were frescoes around the story of Esther and Ahasver for the Palazzo Lamellini alla Zecca, where the famous noblewoman and painter Sofonisba Anguissola previously lived. After the death of Giovanni Battista Paggi, the public commissions increased again, so that he had many of his pictures painted or finished by pupils and in 1635 he even had to refuse the appointment to the court of the Duke of Mantua because of the flood of orders . His ability to imitate and adapt to the art movements of his time, such as that of Peter Paul Rubens , Anthonis van Dyck , but also that of the Bolognese painting school of Annibale Carracci and Guercino prevented the development of an independent and personal style and in some cases resulted in a mixture of his painting directions Role models.

His numerous students include Angelica Veronica Airola, Bernardo Bernardi, Valerio Castelli, Francesco Capurro, Giovanni Battista Casone, David Corte, Gregorio De Ferrari, Francesco Gentileschi, Antonio Invrea, Francesco Merano, Giovanni Paolo Oderico, Andrea Podesta, Giuseppe Porta, Luca Saltarella , Giovanni Stefano Verdura, Lazzaro Villanova, Giovanni Vincenzo Zerbi and his nephew Giovanni Battista Fiasella, who inherited the estate of his deceased uncle in 1669.
