Giuseppe Patania (born January 18, 1780 in Palermo , † February 23, 1852 in Palermo) was an Italian painter of classicism in Sicily .

Life

Patania was a student of Giuseppe Velasco and Vincenzo Riolo in Palermo , then he attended the Accademia del Nudo. At first he devoted himself to subjects of sacred content, which he mostly executed as a fresco . He later switched to mythological subjects, painted altarpieces and is considered one of the best portraitists in Palermo in the 19th century. One of his students was Gerlando Marsiglia .

In 1841 Giuseppe Patania was elected an Honorary NA of the National Academy of Design in New York .
