Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto

The Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto is an early baroque church in Palermo .

The church in Via Incoronazione was built according to a design by Mariano Smiriglio between 1620 and 1623 in the early Baroque style.

A portal flanked by two columns is in front of the three-part facade. In a cartouche above is a coat of arms with the crown of the viceroys supported by two putti . The second facade segment is dominated by two eye-catching decorated windows and an aedicula-like round arch niche in which the sculptural group Madonna, Child and St. John the Boy is set up. Above the entablature with a triangular gable arranged in the middle there is a large oculus , which is framed on both sides by rhombuses and floral ornaments that simulate volutes . The facade is closed at the top by a flattened gable. All decorative elements of the facade are kept in brown and thus develop an impressive visual effect in front of the white brickwork.

The single-nave interior with the four side chapels was provided with stucco and frescoes by Pietro Novelli . Eight scenes from the lives of saints are shown. The altarpiece "Four Martyrs" from 1765 is by Gioacchino Martorana and the altarpiece "Trinity" by Giuseppe Patania .
