Mariano Smiriglio

Mariano Smiriglio (* 1561 in Palermo ; † 1636 ibid) was an Italian painter and architect of the transition from Mannerism to Baroque in Sicily .

Life

Together with Zoppo di Gangi, Smiriglio was a student of Filippo Paladini . He first set up a painting workshop in Palermo. A little later he was appointed architect of the Senate of Palermo.

After the extension of the Cassaro in Palermo to the sea in 1581, Smiriglio received the order from Viceroy Marcantonio Colonna (1577–1584) to build a two-part city gate, which Colonna gave the name Porta Felice . A triumphal gate in honor of the entry of Viceroy Enrique de Guzman, Count of Olivarez (1592–1595), was designed by Smiriglio in 1592.

In 1620 he directed the construction of the Palazzo di Cavalieri d'Arme, the Arsenal (1630), the Ospedale di S. Giacomo, was responsible for the expansion of the Palazzo Pretorio and, after the death of Giulio Lasso, took over the completion of the Quattro Canti in Palermo, so he created the ornamental and plastic jewelry for this.

In terms of church buildings in Palermo, Santa Maria del Carmine (1626), Santa Maria Valverde , Santa Eulalia dei Catalani, Santa Maria dei Rimedi , San Matteo al Cassaro and San Antonio da Padova are ascribed to him.

As a painter he decorated the Cappella del Crocifisso der Gesù , created ceiling frescoes for the oratory of the Brotherhood dell'Immacolata in San Francesco d'Assisi and paintings in the Chiesa del Carmine of Alcamo , an Assumption of the Virgin for the main church of Salemi and for the Cathedral of Palermo received a Santa Lucia and a silver urn for Santa Rosalia .
