Santa Maria Valverde is a Baroque church in Palermo .

In the 12th century a Carmelite monastery was founded near the old port . In 1315 it changed to the Augustinians and finally to the Carmelites again in the 16th century. The monastery buildings no longer exist today. The former monastery church on Largo Cavalieri di Malta was built in 1514. The bell tower dates from the 18th century. The unusually splendid interior decoration of the single-nave church made of marble and stucco was designed by Mariano Smiriglio in 1633 . Between twisted marble columns and colored mosaics, allegorical figures, saints , putti , animals and plant ornaments are placed in abundance in stucco . The figures added in the 18th century were designed by Paolo Amato and completed by Andrea Palma . The frescoes are by Antonio Grano .
