San Francesco d'Assisi (Palermo)
The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Palermo is a Gothic basilica .
history
There is evidence of a Franciscan settlement in Palermo as early as 1235, the buildings of which were badly damaged at the instigation of the Palermitan clergy. Gregory IX. instructed the Archbishop of Messina to repair the damage. The current church was built between 1255 and 1277 as a three-aisled structure. The portal dates from 1302. The interior was redesigned several times from the 15th century. Artists who contributed to the decor include Domenico Gagini and Antonello Gagini and Giacomo Serpotta . In 1924 the church was given the honorary title of papal minor basilica .
San Francesco was badly damaged in World War II and after the war it was rebuilt on the model of Sant'Agostino .
The church is connected to a monastery of the Franciscan conventuals (seat of the Provinciale Curia and the Biblioteca Francescana) . Right next to the church, in Via Immacolatella, are the Oratorio dell'Immacolatella and the Oratorio di San Lorenzo , which are characterized by rich stucco decorations by Giacomo Serpotta .
organ
The organ was built in 1961 by the Tamburini organ builder. The instrument stands directly behind the altar on the choir wall. It has 46 stops on three manual works and a pedal.
