Giulio Lasso
Giulio Lasso, also Borgianni or Scalzo (* 1565/70 in Rome , † November 7, 1612 in Palermo ) was an Italian architect and engineer who worked in Sicily .
He worked as a sculptor and architect in Messina , Catania , Piazza Armerina , San Martino alle Scale (near Monreale ) and Palermo, as a fortress builder in Milazzo , Pozzallo and Capo Passero . His main works are the Quattro Canti ( four corners ) built in Palermo between 1608 and 1620 . The concave facades of these four palaces at a central intersection are considered a typical example of the Sicilian Baroque . The building ensemble was completed by Mariano Smiriglio after Lasso's death . Lasso was able to finish the church of the Benedictine Abbey of San Martino delle Scale in 1612 . He also designed the colonnades and the western cloister of the Benedictine monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena in Catania , which was badly damaged by the 1693 earthquake in the Val di Noto .
Lasso was the stepbrother of the painter Orazio Borgianni (* around 1575 in Rome; † January 15, 1616 there ), who accompanied him to Sicily.
