The National Museum Agostino Pepoli ( Italian Museo Regionale Agostino Pepoli ) of Trapani (Italy) is one of the most important art museums in Sicily . It has existed since 1908.

history

The museum has been located in the fourteenth century Carmelite monastery since the early 20th century. It is next to the basilica and pilgrimage church of Maria Santissima Annunziata , where the 14th century marble statue of the miraculous Madonna di Trapani is located. The origins of the collection come from the fund of Count Agostino Pepoli , supplemented by donations of the paintings of the Neapolitan school from the then mayor of Trapanis Giovan Battista Fardella (1818–1881). After the Second World War, it was designated as the region's museum.

In the 1960s, the museum was fundamentally rebuilt. The architect Franco Minissi received the regional prize for architecture "IN.ARCH" in 1969 for his work.

Stigmata of St. Francis by Titian

The museum houses an important collection of decorative art and sculptures, including works by the Gaginis , mainly made of coral and silver, as well as various sculptures and nativity scenes. In the 16th century the area around Trapani was known for its coral cutting work.

The museum also includes an art gallery, which includes the painting by Titian "Stigmata of St. Francis" from 1530 and Giacomo Balla's portrait of Nunzio Nasi (1850–1935). It also contains the "Tesoro della Madonna". Archaeological finds and historical objects from the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani are also on display.

Occasionally, special exhibitions are curated. In 2008 the exhibition “ Caravaggio : L'immagine del divino” with 14 works by the painter attracted a lot of attention.
