Santa Caterina (Italian: Chiesa di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria ) is a church building in Palermo.

location

One of the long sides of the church is on the Piazza Pretoria , its facade is on the Piazza Bellini . It is part of the extensive building complex of a Dominican monastery.

history

The monastery was founded as a nunnery in 1310 as a result of a donation from the nobles Bevenuta Mastrangelo Santafiori. In the 16th century the monastery was enlarged and the current church building was built by an unknown architect on behalf of the prioress Maria del Carretto between 1566 and 1596 and dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria .

description

The two-part outer facade is structured by pilaster strips arranged in pairs and a wide beam. A double staircase leads to the main portal in the gaginesque style . In an aedicule above the portal is the statue of Saint Catherine from 1685.

Typical for numerous churches of women's orders of this time is their single-nave structure. The lavish interior decoration mostly dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Multicolored marble and stucco cover church walls and decorate chapels and numerous figural marble pictures and bas-reliefs tell mostly Old Testament stories, with the high relief "Jonas and the Fish" clearly standing out qualitatively. Its creator is said to be the less well-known Giovan Battista Ragusa (died 1727), to whom the figures of the four saints Dominicans in the choir are ascribed. In the right transept there is a work by the sculptor Antonello Gagini from 1534. Maria dell Carretto, the founder of this church, was buried in a sarcophagus behind the main altar.

The vaults under the gallery show frescoes by Francesco Sozzi and Alessandro d'Anna (1769), the ceiling of the nave was by Filippo Randazzo in 1744 , the dome paintings with the “Triumph of the Saints Dominicans” (1751) are by Vito d'Anna and die The presbytery vaults were painted by Antonio and Paolo Filocamo .
