Paolo Filocamo (* 1688 in Messina , † 1743 ibid), was an Italian painter and architect of the late Baroque in Sicily .

Life

Paolo was a member of a family of artists in Messina. Together with his brothers Antonio and Gaetano he studied in Rome with Carlo Maratta . Back in Messina, the brothers founded a well-attended art academy with a focus on " fresco painting ".

In the following years, the brothers supplied numerous frescoes and panel paintings to churches and private clients, including King John V of Portugal (1706–1750).

In 1717, Paolo, patronized by his friend, the architect Filippo Juvarra , designed the spiral tower of S. Gregorio in Messina, which copied the campanile of the famous building by Francesco Borromini " Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza " in Rome. The ceiling paintings in S. Gregorio in Messina, which, like most of their works, were destroyed by the great earthquake in Messina in 1908 , are considered to be the main work of the brothers . Paolo Filocamo also worked in the Cathedral of Acireale and in the Santa Caterina in Palermo . All three brothers died during a plague epidemic in 1743.

Pietro Paolo Vasta and Placido Campolo were students of the Filocamo brothers.
