Antonio Filocamo (* 1669 in Messina ; † 1743 ibid.) Was an Italian late Baroque painter in Sicily .

Life

Antonio was a member of a family of artists in Messina. Like his brothers Paolo and Gaetano, he studied in Rome with Carlo Maratta . Back in Messina, the Filocamo brothers founded a well-attended art academy with a focus on "fresco painting" , in which Antonio had specialized.

In the following years, the brothers supplied numerous frescoes and panel paintings to churches and private clients, including King John V of Portugal (1706–1750).

The ceiling paintings in S. Gregorio in Messina, which, like most of their works, were destroyed by the great earthquake in Messina in 1908 , are considered to be the main work of the brothers . Antonio Filocamo also worked in the Cathedral of Acireale and in the Santa Caterina in Palermo. Andrea Filocamo also wrote the “Madonna of the Letter” from 1690, which is painted in the Byzantine style and is located in the Cathedral of Palermo.

All three brothers died during a plague epidemic in 1743.

Pietro Paolo Vasta and Placido Campolo were students of the Filocamo brothers.
