Cortenbach (noble family)

Cortenbach - also Courtenbach, Curtenbach, Cordebach - is an old noble family that traces its origins back to Cortenbach Castle in Voerendaal in what is now the Dutch province of Limburg . The first known bearer of the name was Gerart von Cortenbach, who was enfeoffed with glory in 1381 by Duke Wenzel of Brabant and Limburg .

Many namesake came to high political positions in the Rhine-Maas area and in the Duchy of Jülich-Berg . For centuries, Cortenbach were lords of Helmond and bailiffs of Roermond . Several of the name holders were leading members of the Teutonic Knight Order , such as Ivo von Cortenbach , Landkomtur of the Deutschordensballei Alden Biesen , in the 16th century Johann von Cortenbach , Commander of the Teutonic Order Commander St. Aegidius in Aachen , Biesen and Petersvuren and Franz Egon von Cortenbach , Commander of the Teutonic Order in Siersdorf from 1736 to 1742.

From 1646, through the marriage of Johann Franz Gerhard von Cortenbach to Anna Klara von Zweiffel , the family came into possession of Wissem Castle in Troisdorf for about 100 years .

The coat of arms shows three red diagonal bars in gold. On the helmet with red and gold covers, a man's torso in the same color as the shield with a red hat with tassels.
