Zweiffel , also Zweifel , Zwyffel , Zwyvel , is the name of an old noble family in the Duchy of Berg .

Name, possessions and offices

The name is possibly derived from Zweiffel Castle in Herrenstrunden , which before 1806 was one of the knights' seats of the Duchy of Berg eligible for the state assembly. The family temporarily owned possessions in Cologne-Brück , Leverkusen ( Morsbroich Castle ), Lohmar ( Sülz House ), Siegburg , Troisdorf ( Wissem Castle ) and Cologne-Wahn (then Wahn Castle ), Wermelskirchen , Hückeswagen and Remscheid . They were collators of the Katharinen Vicarie in Lennep and a memorie in the church in Hückeswagen.

Various namesake held administrative offices in the Duchy of Berg, z. B. Landrentmeister , bailiffs of Michaelsberg Abbey , Schultheißen in Porz and Siegburg , Landdinger in Blankenberg . Bailiff at Solingen and Hückeswagen and customs officer at Lennep and Wermelskirchen .

A branch of the family was able to spread in the north-eastern Teutonic Order in the Middle Ages .
