Johann Christian von Zweiffel (born January 8, 1745 in Magdeburg , † August 13, 1817 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general and chief of Infantry Regiment No. 45 .

Johann Christian was the son of August Ernst von Zweiffel (* 1715 in Alkehnen; † February 24, 1774 in Magdeburg) and his wife Anna Maria, née Gernsmer († January 17, 1786 in Magdeburg). His father was a colonel in the “von Saldern” infantry regiment No. 5 and a knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Military career

On September 10, 1760 Zweiffel became an ensign in the regiment of the Duke of Braunschweig . During the Seven Years' War he took part in the battles of Liegnitz and Torgau as well as in the siege of Breslau and Schweidnitz . On May 2, 1763, he was second lieutenant and on June 4, 1768, first lieutenant . On July 5, 1776 he was promoted to staff captain , after which he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On April 20, 1778 he became captain and company commander and on June 4, 1788 major . On October 3, 1788, he was commander of the 1st battalion and on January 20, 1789, he was also the commander of the 2nd battalion.

In the First Coalition War he took part in the battles of Kaiserslautern , Trippstadt , the battles of St. Amand, Valenciennes , Saarbrücken and the siege of Landau . On May 8, 1793 he received the order Pour le Mérite for the battles of Vicogne and Hasnon . At St. Ingbert , he defended his position in Rentrisch for nine hours against 6,000 French, but ultimately had to retire. Shortly afterwards, on May 18, 1795, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and commander of the depot battalion in the "Louis Ferdinand" infantry regiment No. 20 . On October 6, 1797 he became commander of the 2nd Battalion of Infantry Regiment No. 3 ( patent from January 11, 1796). Shortly thereafter, on May 20, 1798, he became a colonel with a patent from June 11, 1798 and on October 23, 1800, commander of Infantry Regiment No. 3. On October 20, 1805, he was appointed Chief of Infantry Regiment No. 45. To this end, he received an apartment in the Bayreuth Castle on November 27, 1805 and was appointed major general on May 20, 1806 (patent from May 22, 1806).

During the fourth coalition war he withdrew from Erfurt and went to the Weimar Corps near Gotha . In the course of his retreat he came to the Blücher Corps . After his surrender at Ratekau , Zweiffel was taken prisoner near Lübeck and was brought to Nancy . He is back in Bayreuth on September 20, 1807 , but was given half his salary . He applied for an apartment in Berlin and received permission to move on October 6, 1807. On February 1, 1814, he received his resignation with a pension .

family

Zweiffel married Dorothea Christiane Elisabeth Guischard, eldest daughter of Hofrat Guischard from Magdeburg, on June 25, 1777 in Magdeburg. After her death, he married Johanne Ernestine von Platen (born April 25, 1767, † October 5, 1804 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) from the Falkenberg family. The couple had the following children:
