The infantry regiment with the later number No. 3 was one of the oldest and most respected Brandenburg-Prussian regiments. It was set up in 1665 as a Fargel on foot in southern Germany . It was closely linked to the history of the Princely House of Anhalt-Dessau , which served the Brandenburg electors and Prussian kings. It was mostly located in Halle (Saale) and drawn its recruits from the Duchy of Magdeburg .

General story

On December 16, 1665, Colonel Johann von Fargel raised a regiment in the course of the Anglo-Dutch War (1665–1667) in the imperial cities of Regensburg , Nuremberg and Frankfurt (Main) . In 1679 Johann Georg von Anhalt-Dessau became head of the regiment . Until 1758 the regiment was called "Anhalt" , since other members of the house of Anhalt became regiment chiefs. From 1688 to 1695 it was in Dutch service. Except from 1699 to 1718, like the Guard, it consisted of three battalions, each with a grenadier company.

evaluation

Under Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau, the regiment became one of the most important training centers for the Brandenburg-Prussian army. Until 1740 it was considered the best in Prussia after the royal regiment. But especially during the Seven Years' War it did not live up to expectations.

Whereabouts and succession

The regiment was founded on November 8, 1806 as the Renouard Foot Regiment No. 3 dissolved in Magdeburg by surrender.

Uniform, equipment

In the 18th century, the regimental uniform consisted of a blue uniform jacket with red cuffs and cuffs and a few white braids. The cap of the winged grenadiers was white, silver brass fittings with a white tuft. The regimental flag was yellow.
