List of infantry regiments of the Old Prussian Army
The infantry of the Old Prussian Army comprised 60 regiments at its peak. In addition, there were several other formations and garrison grenadier battalions. The formation of the first regiments in a standing army took place after the decision of the Brandenburg-Prussian Privy Council of June 5, 1644. The gradually increasing regiments finally went down in 1806 in the fourth coalition war against Napoleonic France in large numbers. Only eight regiments were taken over into the new army, which historians call the "New Prussian Army" to distinguish it.
Explanation of the system
The Prussian regiments were numbered shortly before the army collapsed in 1806. Before that, the regiments were named exclusively after their owners. In the case of identical names, an "old" or "young" was added depending on the age. Some regiments had general names, such as "Prince of Prussia" (No. 18). The Prussian army reformer, Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau , introduced the first master list with his “specifications” in 1729/1737 , which was based on the principle of anciency . To distinguish the New Prussian regiments , the designation "No." used by Hans Bleckwenn is shown here with an Arabic number (New Prussian "No."). Garrison troops are given a "Roman No.". In addition, the year of foundation has been added to the list below. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups . When Friedrich Wilhelm II took office in 1786, the distinction between traditional “regiments on foot” and “ fusilier regiments” recruited after 1740 was abandoned. All were now uniformly called "infantry regiments". In 1806 the infantry regiments were given numbers in addition to the regiment chief name.
Field infantry
The regiments also always led grenadier companies , which were grouped into battalions in times of war . Only contingents of the garrison grenadiers remained together in times of peace.

Land regiments
There were four land regiments in Prussia, which were only called up when there was a risk of war. The officers, NCOs and reels received half their pay. The commoners received no pay as they were only called up by the estates when there was a risk of war . The officers and non-commissioned officers were often transferred to the land regiments for reasons of age in order to be able to take care of them.
