Puttkamer joined the Prussian Army as a cadet in order - like many generations of his ancestors and relatives before - to pursue a career as a soldier. As a young officer he took part in the fighting force in the Seven Years' War . In 1756 he was a participant in the battle of Lobositz ; it was followed by the battle of Kolin in 1757 . The battles near Pirna , the battle near Prague , the battle near Breslau and the battle near Leuthen followed. He was wounded in the battle of Torgau . In 1789 Puttkamer was in command and from 1793 to 1806 chief of Infantry Regiment No. 36 in Brandenburg an der Havel . His promotion to lieutenant general took place in 1800.
Puttkamer was retired from military service at the age of 78.
Puttkamer inherited the Deutsch Karstnitz and gasoline estates from his late father in 1740; here he also spent his old age. He had inherited the Treblin estate from a cousin.
