Johann Georg Wilhelm von Keller

Johann Georg Wilhelm Freiherr von Keller (born May 11, 1710 in Ilmenau , † November 20, 1785 in Stettin ) was a German officer , most recently lieutenant general and governor of Stettin.

Life

His father was the director of mining and metallurgy Johann Reinhard von Keller.

In 1741 Keller resigned from the service of the Electorate of Saxony as a captain in the regiment of Prince Wilhelm Christian von Gotha , but, since this regiment did not come into real formation, he left. In 1742 he went to the Infantry Regiment "von Dossow" No. 45 of the Prussian Army and in 1752 became major there . In the Seven Years' War in 1757 he was with the Allied Army in the west against the French. Then he came to the garrison in Magdeburg .

In 1758, Keller fought with honors against the Swedes in the battles near Hornburg , the Weisse Hirsch and Tarnow , in September near Dresden and afterwards under General von Wedell in the Mark . In 1759 he received the man fief of Haus Baerl from Frederick the Great as a particularly deserving officer . In the same year he took part in the battle near Aue, was besieged in Torgau , but appalled by General von Wunsch . With this he conquered Leipzig on September 13th and was then commander of the city. Until the peace of 1763 , Keller was able to steadfastly maintain the city, although it was besieged twice and requested to surrender. In 1761 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel , in 1765 colonel and in 1771 to major general. In 1770 he received the "von Braun" fusilier regiment No. 37 . In the Bavarian War of Succession in 1778/1779 he distinguished himself near Trautenau , where he covered the king's retreat, for which the monarch awarded him the order Pour le Mérite ; he also received the Liebenhausen feud. In 1782 he became lieutenant general and in 1785 governor of Szczecin. In the same year he became chief of the "von Hake" No. 8 infantry regiment . But he died at the end of the same year.

family

Keller was married to Sophie Freiin Schade von der Selve (* 1724 - January 25, 1799) since 1745. She was the daughter of the Hesse-Darmstadt Lieutenant General and Governor of Gießen Freiherr von Schade. The couple had two sons and six daughters.
