Curt Jany

Curt Jany (born October 22, 1867 in Memel , † February 18, 1945 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and military historian and holder of the Silver Leibniz Medal .

origin

Jany comes from a family of officers. His grandfather was Major Wilhelm Jany (1796–1888), who founded the Prussian Association in Königsberg in 1848 and an institution for the deaf and dumb in 1873. His parents were Lieutenant Colonel Victor Jany (1836–1919) and his wife Marie, née Bernhardi (1842–1877), a daughter of the pharmacist Adolf Bernhardi from Königsberg. His aunt Elfriede Jany founded the first Froebel kindergarten in Königsberg . His brother Wilhelm Jany (1873–1954) was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives, the zoologist and Sahara researcher Eberhard Jany (* 1917) was his nephew and editor of some of his uncle's works.

Life

He studied at the universities in Leipzig and Berlin . In 1888 Jany joined the 3rd Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 66 of the Prussian Army , where he was employed as a company officer and battalion adjutant. In October 1896, he was assigned to the War Academy for three years for further training . Then he was posted to the Swiss Army , where he was able to perfect his French. In 1903 Jany joined the General Staff as a captain , where he remained until the outbreak of the First World War . In the meantime he had a troop command as a company commander in the 4th Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 157 from 1906 to 1908 . During the war he was battalion commander in the 6th Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 68 and commander of the Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 53.

His work on the General Staff was always research into military history . He wrote numerous individual publications. His most important work is documentary contributions and research on the history of Prussia. Army . It was and will remain the most comprehensive account of the Brandenburg-Prussian army, as the original documents were destroyed in the air raid on Potsdam on April 14, 1945.

Jany died unmarried in Berlin on February 18, 1945.
